A New Year’s Eve aperitif: Sugar-free mulled wine syrup to add to sparkling wine

Sparkling wine might be the traditional choice. But why not offer a different aperitif on New Year’s Eve? A sugar-free mulled wine syrup made from red wine, orange, cinnamon, cloves and aniseed.

Preparation:

  1. Use a peeler to peel two strips of zest from the orange. Squeeze the orange. Put the freshly squeezed orange juice with the rest of the ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to the boil.
  2. Let the liquid simmer until it has significantly reduced (by more than half). Then allow to cool for a short while, remove the spices and use a funnel to pour the mixture into a clean bottle with a tight-fitting lid. Allow to cool completely and store in the refrigerator.

Tip: Top up with sparkling wine for an ideal winter aperitif! The mulled wine syrup is highly concentrated – just one teaspoon of syrup is needed for each portion.
